By Boat Through the Canals of St. Petersburg
Just a ten-minute walk from the Hotel Astoria lies the Neva — the waterway that crosses the city center, its banks lined with St. Petersburg's most important historical buildings. Downstream from the Liteyny Bridge stands the modest yet original Summer Palace of Peter the Great; beyond it lies the Peter and Paul Fortress, the foundation of the modern city; and near the Palace Bridge is the Hermitage, the world’s largest museum, founded by Catherine the Great.
Venturing off the main waterway into the canal system reveals unique cityscapes. The Moyka River, offering views of the Hotel Astoria and the striking golden dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, flows toward the sea past neoclassical facades toward New Holland Island, an artistic project by Dasha Zhukova. On the opposite side stands the Mariinsky Palace — a former imperial residence — while near the intersection with the Fontanka, the Mikhailovsky Garden flourishes with lush foliage. Along the Fontanka Embankment, you’ll find the Bolshoi Theatre and the Fabergé Museum; the river joins the Neva near the famous Summer Garden, created in the 18th century by Peter the Great.
