"IDOMENEO, RE DI CRETA" AT THE MARIINSKY II
The Mariinsky Theatre has staged a rare operatic masterpiece by Mozart "Idomeneo, re di Creta" dedicating the new production to the 270th anniversary of the composer's birth and the 245th anniversary of the work's world premiere.
The premiere production was directed by Roman Kocherzhevsky, known primarily for his work in drama theater, who effectively combined the majestic ancient plot with modern multimedia technologies.
"Idomeneo, re di Creta" is one of Mozart's most innovative works, marking the emergence of a new genre: heroic opera. The ancient myth of the Cretan king who nearly sacrificed his only son to the god Poseidon has attracted the attention of many composers, but it was Mozart's work that cemented its place in the history of world music.
The work's world premiere took place on January 29, 1781, at the Residenztheater in Munich, and it was first performed in Russia in 1820 in St. Petersburg. By the 20th century, the opera seria genre had lost popularity and was even considered old-fashioned. However, in recent decades, interest in this score has grown, and the work is once again being performed on the world's stages.
The Mariinsky Theatre's new production proves that, in addition to its outstanding musical component, Idomeneo also boasts a truly engaging, captivating plot, which is given a contemporary feel through impressive multimedia design. The square, the pier, the cliff, the temple — these and other spaces will be vividly recreated on stage using large screens, completely immersing the viewer in the world of the great plot.
