"RUSSIAN FOREST" BY IVAN SHISHKIN
An unprecedented exhibition of works by the legendary landscape artist Ivan Shishkin, one of the most iconic artists in the history of Russian art, has opened in the Benois Wing of the State Russian Museum. For the first time, his legacy is presented in its entirety and detail — from monumental forest landscapes to intimate studies.
The 120 works included in the retrospective include pieces from the collections of the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, and others.
Ivan Shishkin was called the "hero of the forest," the "king of the forest," and the "patriarch of landscape." The artist not only created a gallery of astonishingly realistic landscapes but also crafted a coherent, epic image of Russian nature. The artist believed that a true landscape is born from personal experience and memory—from the impressions that form in a person's childhood. "I truly love the Russian forest and paint only it," the artist confessed.
The exhibition is organized chronologically. The first hall presents the development of Ivan Shishkin's artistic style from the 1850s to the 1880s. Next, viewers are introduced to images of pine forests — a central motif in the artist's work, revealing his ability to convey the complex nuances of light and air. The exhibition concludes with engravings from the album "60 Etchings by Ivan Shishkin. 1870–1892" and paintings from the 1890s, summing up his creative journey.
The final highlight is the painting "Ship Grove," completed in 1898. This is the master's final work, in which the image of a pine forest takes on a symbolic resonance — as the embodiment of the strength and monumentality of Russian nature. Contemporaries said of the painting: "The exhibition smelled of pine — the sun and light had increased!" admiring the profound impact it had on the viewer.
